SEPHARDIC TOURS

Since the 1 st century it is known that there was a great Jewish community in the Iberian Peninsula, and in the Middle Ages, it became one of the biggest in the world. The sephardic culture marked the evolution of al-Andalus, due to the way of living, the traditions and its influence.
It is imposible to undestand the history of the Iberian Peninsula if we don’t pause and think about the Jewish reality and its legacy. The culture, the art, the music, the poetry and the science had Sephardic well-known members who will left a stamp in the wisdom of al-Andalus.

SEPHARDIC TOURS

TOUR IN SEVILLE

Description:  In this town there was once a very big Jewish quarter which was separated from the rest of Seville by a wall. In 1248, Seville was conquered and Ferdinand the 3 rd received two keys of the city: the one from Seville and the one from the Jewish (both preserved and shown in the
Cathedral). In 1391 there was an assault to this quarter which ended with loads of impounded properties and synagogues transformed into churches. The tour in Seville goes through this neighbourhood and the main places which are still preserved. And also we will know the most relevant well-known persons who undoubtedly influenced so many centuries of the history in the beautiful town.

Main places included in the tour: The Santa Cruz and Saint Bartholomew neighbourhood, the Church of Santa María la Blanca, the square of Santa Cruz, the Church of Saint Bartholomew, and the House of the Memory of al-Andalus.

Duration: 2,5 hours

Distance: 4 kilometres

Elevation: 0 metres

Level: Easy

TOUR IN CORDOBA

Description:  The history of this town is closely related to the Jewish, since the arrival of the Umayyad until their expulsion of the year 1492. In fact it is one of the best towns to follow the Sephardic heritage and where the Jewish quarter is best preserved, including a beautiful synagogue. This tour goes through all the emblematic spaces, getting to know the history of the Jewish community and their well-known wise men, when Cordoba was a model in the whole world.

Main places included in the tour: the Jewish quarter and the city centre, the synagogue, the Sephardic house, walls and the remains of the Jewish castle.

Duration: 2,5 hours

TOUR IN LUCENA

Description:  The Little Pearl of Sefarad, like it was known back then, had a cultural apogee which was very renowned in al-Andalus. It was where the Academy for the Talmudic studies was located and where we can find the Jewish quarter and the synagogue or the remains of one of the biggest Jewish cemeteries in the Iberian Peninsula. With this tour we visit this town which was mainly Jewish, the refugee for loads of the expelled ones from other towns. The Sephardic culture grew in this town like none other.

Main places included in the tour: the church of Santiago, the Santiago quarter, pottery, the Castle of Moral, the walls, the cemetery, the Palace of the Count of Santa Ana.

TOUR IN GRANADA

We can still find some of the corners of the old Jewish quarter and know its history remembering the most relevant well-known people which determined the history of Granada. This tour goes through these areas of the town which are very helpful to understand what it was like by then and their relation with the authorities.

Not only does Blanca have deep knowledge of the architecture, history and geography of the Alhambra and Granada, she worked professionally on projects to analyze and restore the Nasrid Palaces and water systems. On top of that, Blanca is quite skillful at communicating the brilliant complexity of the design and environs and how people inhabited the area through the ages. Blanca clearly enjoys sharing her love of the Alhambra and Granada as well as sharing her personal connections to the Flamenco community. With her kindness and enthusiasm, Blanca is a true guide and teacher and I am grateful for the time spent with her.

Our visit to the Alhambra in Granada was one of the highlights of our visit to Spain due to the fabulous half day tour provided by Blanca from Masquetours. Blanca is incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of architecture and history and also very willing to share names of her favourite restaurants and bars. Blanca intimate and personal association with the Alhambra was fascinating too with relatives still owning shops and working inside the village in the same photography business from decades ago. Blanca picked up our interest in certain aspects of the dome design techniques (Murqarnas) and was able to concentrate more on this to really bring the palaces to life and tell us about her work in helping to conserve the palaces. Thank you once again for a terrific day out in Granada. Judy from Australia

Blanco feels like a friend showing us her hometown. We are completely at ease with her and during the trip we talk about many things from cost of living, personal interest & hobbies. We even share travel stories. There was never a moment of quietness, it was all talking like friends do on road trips.
